Indian Tourism

The phenomenon of travelers and tourists visiting India was neither rare nor novel in the past and has occurred throughout the country’s history. From ancient times to the modern, India has fascinated people from every region in the world. From envoys receiving royal protection and patronage to the common people traveling long or short distances, either for exploring something new or for fulfilling an obligation such as a religious and spiritually-oriented one, travel and tourism was not uncommon at all, since the ancient times.

Also, in India, guests visiting distant places received great and generous hospitality from the hosts, as guests were considered to be akin to gods and it was stated in Sanskrit – India’s ancient language, ‘Athithi Devo Bhava’ –“Guests are equal in status to gods” and should be treated with as much respect and regard.

Modern India is home to some of the most significant natural and man-made wonders on the planet and is thus a powerful magnet for tourism. The open door policies of modern India have put the Tourism Industry on the fast track, as luxury hotels and beach resorts are incessantly under construction. With numerous major languages (and hundreds of dialects), and dozens of large cities and over 700,000 villages, India is in many ways a country, which displays a variety of facets such as an ancient heritage, modernity, continuity with rapid change etc.
